Should NDM change our understanding of decision making?
article
What sort of activity should we understand to be encompassed by the term decision making? As laid out by Lipshitz et al. (this issue), the Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) framework offers a view of human decision making that stems not from the familiar economic/mathematical theoretical tradition of nonnative decision theory but from practical attempts to understand, and, moreover, train and improve, experts in action. The requirements of this applied activity have led to a recognition that the research paradigms and discoveries ofbehavioural decision theorists have limited practical utility. Of itself, this claim shouldbe of concern to behavioural decision researchers. If it doesn't inform or reflect natural decision making, what is the value of decision-making research?
