An innovative concept for loading and unloading-narrow body airplanes
conference paper
In Wide-body airplanes containers are used for handling luggage in and out and airplane. In narrow-body airplanes loading and unloading packages is still done manually causing heavy physical loads in awkward postures due to the limiting height in the compartment. Incidence rates of musculoskeletal health problems are high. A participative innovation process was set up resulting in the development of a Load And UNioad CHain, LAUNCH®. The retractable system saves space and payload capacity compared to in plane systems like a BIN-system. The results of testing a prototype in a mock-up are described and discussed. The freighters qualify the system as a good improvement. It is concluded that physical load can not be eliminated fully but can be reduced to lower risk levels despite a higher (un)loading pace. Further improvement and development is instigated.
