Bridging Systems- and Software Engineering: Lessons learned from High-Tech Companies

conference paper
The development of high-tech systems and solutions requires effective collaboration between Systems Engineering (SE) and Software Engineering (SWE) professionals. This cooperation is often difficult, and typical challenges include unexpected system behaviors, repeated work, and project delays. To address these issues, it is important to understand the underlying causes. This paper describes the journey and experiences of a practiceoriented socio-technical study, which included experts from four major high-tech companies, four universities, and an applied research institute, all located in The Netherlands. Over one year, the group participated in four workshops and met between sessions to discuss the current situation, construct a vision of an improved future, and identify necessary changes. The paper extends our earlier work in [12]. The novelty of this work lies in moving from company-specific to sector-level coanalysis. It provides evidence for applicability of the framework in a multi-company context, showing how organizations can collaboratively construct a shared vision and identify interventions. The paper (1) explains the steps taken by the group, offering guidance on creating solutions tailored to each company, (2) presents a vision for a better future for industry, based on a seven-perspective model, and (3) discusses lessons learned from the experience, applicable for other companies.
