Effects of 3D sound on visual scanning

conference paper
An experiment was conducted in a flight simulator to explore the effectiveness of a 3D sound display as support to visual information from a head down display (HDD). Pilots had to perform two main tasks in separate conditions: intercepting and following a target jet. Performance was measured for these tasks and for two secondary tasks. Furthermore, eye movements were recorded during the conditions. In one half of the conditions some information from the HDD was supported by 3D sound. The results showed that pilots could check the HDD less frequently when 3D sound was available. Furthermore, performance was increased in several tasks due to 3D sound, in particular, those tasks that require information from outside the cockpit.
