Use of adaptable displays for situation awareness support

conference paper
Different tasks may require different displays. Are users able to select optimal displays? In a flight simulator experiment pilots performed various stereotypical fighter tasks, aided by a set of 2D and 3D displays. Goal of the research was to determine which type of display is optimal for which type of task, and whether pilots select the most optimal display when given a choice of displays. The results showed that given a kind of task there clearly is a display that will optimize performance. Selection of displays by the pilots, however, did not optimize overall performance for a mixed set of tasks.
