The trade dynamics of Aluminium scrap: On the potential consequences of EU export measures

Aluminium as a material and sector is highly relevant to the EU industry due to its wide range of applications and its role as an enabler across different markets. Aluminium is used in the transportation and automotive industry, construction, packaging, electrical and electronic products, among others. To illustrate, automakers rely on aluminium for its lightweight properties in vehicle structural support, which has become increasingly important to offset the weight of batteries in Electric Vehicles (EVs) (Iglesias-Émbil et al., 2020). Note that the automotive sector, mainly EVs, is highlighted as a strategic sector for the EU and currently the Commission is delivering the automotive package to support the industry efforts in the transition to clean mobility1 Aluminium is also essential for other applications, including in its alloy forms for defence and aerospace applications (Li et al., 2023). For example, aluminium alloys are used in the structure of F-35 fighter jets, of which the Netherlands currently operates 472 Furthermore, the industry in itself generates over 1 million (direct and indirect) jobs in the EU3.
