Situation awareness in virtual environments: a literature survey

conference paper
Successful application of a Virtual Environment (VE) in various domains depends on supporting adequate Situation Awareness (SA). Within the context of VE this means giving users a good sense of direction, and making it easy for them to find their way around in the VE. To reach these goals we need insight in how humans navigate and orient themselves in VE. This survey will give a short overview of literature relevant to SA in a VE. Where possible, the consequences of this research are discussed for the choice of interface technology to be used, and for the design of geometrical databases for VE.
