The use of a driving simulator has advantages over conventional (static or semi-dynamic) ways of evaluating road design parameters. These are: (1) the possibility to present truly dynamic road scenes, and (2) the assessment of the design in terms of actual behavioural effects rather than in terms of subjective judgments. The advantages of driving simulator evaluations are illustrated by a number of case studies.
