De Psycholoog als Ergonoom: Klusjesman of Wetenschapper? [The human factor psychologist: odd-job man or scientist?]

lecture
Over the last decennia psychologists active in the field of cognitive ergonomics tend more and more to work as ad hoc problem solvers rather than as scientists. This leads to stagnation in the field of human factors: the professional literature has become flooded with publications and reports that have little or no generalizable theoretical significance. It will soon become impossible to keep up to date with this enormous amount of loose data. As a result there is a real danger that at some time or other work will be done, which has already been done elsewhere, even more than once. To counter this trend cognitive ergonomists must return to a more scientific approach, in which they should translate their problems and research methods into the general theoretical concepts of experimental psychology. From such an approach, in which the distinction disappears between applied and basic research, cognitive ergonomics and experimental psychology will benefit equally.
