Training of systematic diagnosis : a case study in electronics troubleshooting
article
Two studies were carried out with the aim of developing better training methods for Naval maintenance technicians. The first study showed that novices experienced diffi-culties in two areas: 1. accessing relevant domain knowledge in particular problem solving phases (e.g., generating causes, testing causes); 2. keeping track of where they are in the process of diagnosis and deciding what to do next (strategic knowledge). The second study consisted of a more formal evaluation of these ideas, implemented in a knowledge-based guidance system. Results showed that support at the strategic level was not effective, possibly due to a lack of proficiency of basic skills in troubleshoot-ing.
