Performance effects of heat and cold

conference paper
This paper describes research performed at the TNO Human Factors Research Institute related to heat and cold exposure and the effect of these exposures on human performance. The first part describes the development of a technical decision aid based on the Wind Chill Index, that allows commanding officers or medical personnel to predict the risk of cold exposure in terms of direct health risks and in terms of reduced manual performance which represents a safety risk. The second part discusses research on the exploration of differences between individuals in reaction to heat, attempting to determine the underlying causes of such differences. The final aim of this work is to individualize the prediction of heat stress response, as well as to provide information on the relation between the individual differences and expected combat performance.
Binnen het werkgebied thermofysiologie wordt gewerkt aan Technical Decision Aids (TDA's) om commandanten en medische diensten te ondersteunen bij de risico inschatting van warmte en kou.
