Relevantie van het evenwichtsorgaan in de waarneming van helikoptermanoeuvres [Relevance of the vestibular system in the perception of helicopter manoeuvres]

article
In the present report a field experiment is described about the role of the vestibu-lar system in the (dis)orientation of helicopter pilots during manoeuvres. By means of a comparison between the registered movements of the aircraft and the estimation of these movements by aviators, a measure could be found for the accuracy of this estimation under particular conditions (with or without a visual reference, this combined with rough and slowly performed manoeuvres). The data gathered this way suggest that the vestibular system is never capable in processing exact information with respect to the actual flight profile: as such causing a creeping disorientation (type 1 disorientation) in circumstances with insufficient visual information.
