De invloed van 17 jaren drinkwater-fluoridering op het gebit van volwasenen: een vergelijkend prothesedichtheidsonderzoek in Tiel en Culemborg [The influence of 17 years of water fluoridation upon the dentition of adults]
article
The number of edentulous patients in a group of 500 adults, aged between 25 and 75 yr, in Tiel and a similar group in Culemborg was calculated from the results of a clinical examination carried out in 1970. The differences in denture density in the 2 study groups, at the time and during the 15 yr after the start of water fluoridation in Tiel were calculated by extrapolation. The difference was found to be 3.2% in favor of Tiel at the start of water fluoridation, rising to 13% after 15 yr. This investigation was based on the premise that when a full denture was fitted, extraction of all remaining teeth was the only possible treatment. The decision by a patient to have a full upper denture fitted depended not only on the dental and periodontal state, but also on psychological and financial factors. The attitude of the dentist and the dentist patient ratio also influenced this decision. Although a biased effect by these attendant factors cannot be excluded, 3 results should be considered. Before and at the start of water fluoridation the difference between the 2 groups was very small; after the implementation of water fluoridation the difference steadily increased; the 15 yr difference (13%) is particularly due to a higher number of younger denture wearers in Culemborg.
