The effect of weighting the observations on parameter estimates in groundwater modelling
conference paper
The groundwater system in large parts of the Netherlands can be described as a multi-aquifer system with a sequence of aquifers and aquitards. At the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands, a large-scale model has been developed for the analysis of this groundwater system. Calibration of this model is done by a weighted least squares approach, including prior information on the hydraulic parameters to be estimated. These parameters pertain to the spatially distributed transmissivities of the aquifers, the hydraulic resistances of the aquitards and the infiltration from or drainage to the small-scale surface water system. Weighting of the observations in the least sqares approach can be done in a number of different ways. Results of the parameter estimation procedure seem to be insensitive to the weighting method chosen.
