The pre-employment medical examination in the Netherlands: a descriptive inventory

bookPart
In 1988 a research project in the field of the pre-employment medical examinations was initiated and subsidized by The Netherlands Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The main reason for carrying out this project was the expressed interest of The Netherlands government in the use and effectiveness of the pre-employment medical examinations. The interest of The Netherlands government was due to the lack of insight into the practice of the pre-employment medical examinations, which in turn complicates the development of clear government policies. Such policies are desirable with the forthcoming implementation of parts of The Netherlands Working Environment Act, which enables the government to make the pre-employment medical examinations legally compulsory when certain kinds of work are to be performed. The total research project consisted ofthree parts: a literature study [], an investigation on whether a study on the predictive value of the pre-employment medical examinations was feasible [2] and the inventory [3] of which the results are summarized in this paper. The aim of the inventory was to acquire an insight into the practice of pre-employment medical examinations in The Netherlands.
