International comparison programme of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide measurement in ambient air

article
A comparative analytical study has been carried out in the laboratory by two German and two Dutch institutes, on test-gases containing 250–500μg SO2m−3 (West-Gaeke method) and 100–300μg NO2 m−3 (Saltzman method). After a preliminary period of familiarisation with the analytical methods, the results from all the institutes concerned were found to be in good agreement, with a relative standard deviation of less than ± 5%. Field measurements in Rotterdam (SO2) and Essen (NO2), with relatively low absolute concentrations, also showed satisfactory agreement.
