The behaviour of membranes between electrolyte solutions : II. Membrane potentials at oxidized cellophane
article
In order to test the inference arrived at in Part I that the membrane potential at cellulose membranes depends on the dissociation of acid groups in the membrane substance, experiments were carried out with cellophane membranes, in the cellulose of which carboxyl groups had been produced by oxidation. The membrane potential thus raised and that at the original cellophane depend on the pH in a like manner. This is apparent from the shape and position of the Δ.pH‐curves. In this case Δ is no longer the same for KCl and NaCl.
