Development and validation of wind farm models, survey of activities in past/present/future
conference paper
At the moment several numerical models for the prediction of the power out put of wind farms are available. Further development and validation of these models is taking place within the framework of international R & D programmes. The original objective of the development of wind farm models was the pre diction of the power output of projected wind farms, comparing different geometries. In this way, these models can be applied for the determination of an optimal lay-out as part of feasibility studies. However, since actual wind farms are operational, questions are raised con cerning the impact of power output fluctuations as well as the dynamic loading of wind turbines located in the wake of upstream wind turbines. Models under development will have to include these aspects. This paper presents a survey of activities related to wind farm modelling carried out by MT-TNO within the framework of international cooperation. Both the present state of the art and its realization, as well as the activities planned to be carried out in the near future are described.
