The Lower Carboniferous of key-well UHM-02 onshore the Netherlands and implications for regional basin development

conference paper
The stratigraphy of the Lower Carboniferous in the North Sea area is relatively unknown due to the deep burial and the scarcity of wells penetrating these strata, as this interval is generally considered below the petroleum fairway. In 2001, Dutch onshore well Uithuizermeeden-02 (UHM-02) was drilled targeting the Lower Carboniferous. The well was studied intensively with palynology and foraminifer micropaleontology. This is the first presentation of this data into the public domain. The results allow, for the first time, high resolution correlations to the more intensively studied Belgian area and to the clastic dominated northern Offshore of The Netherlands. In addition, the presentation will show correlations with other sections and wells in The Netherlands, Germany and the UK. Moreover, these interpretations provide new insights in the Lower Carboniferous development of Western Europe, including climate changes and a hitherto unknown mid Namurian tectonic event.
