On the validity and application of reciprocity in acoustical, mechano-acoustical and other dynamical systems

article
The literature on the reciprocity of dynamical systems shows two approaches: an approach based on the linear network theory and another one in which Green's formula and differential equations are considered. The development of the first approach appears to be considerably ahead of the second one. Therefore, at present, considerations about the validity and application of reciprocity can best be based on the linear network theory, also when it concerns an acoustical system. The set of sufficient conditions for reciprocity is: 1. linearity, 2. the system contains only bilateral elements, 3. the system is passive, 4. the vibrations occur about a configuration of stable equilibrium. A number of examples of reciprocity measurements in acoustical and mechano-acoustical systems is given. The examples show some of the possible advantages of reciprocity experiments over direct experiments or the advantages of doing both types of experiments.
