Schedule design in cancer therapy: Is there a cell kinetic basis?
conference paper
Many treatment schedules in cancer therapy have often been proposed to have a scientific basis. In this paper only the following 3 treatment schedules will be dealt with briefly. I. Fractional administration of one type of treatment, either X rays or a chemotherapeutic agent. II. Multiple drug chemotherapy or the combination of drugs and radiotherapy. III. The combination of 2 or more chemotherapeutic agents. It is concluded that on pure theoretical grounds the question whether there is a cell kinetic basis for multiple drug chemotherapy can be answered affirmatively. The practical importance of this aspect can, however, only be evaluated by better models including slowly growing tumors.
