Van heinde en verre: Het rijke natuursteenverleden van het Brugse Ommeland

article
Although Bruges is considered more of a brick city, natural stone is omnipresent in this former medieval metropolis. The rich spectrum of natural stone that we encounter here is the result of the proximity of the sea and the presence of navigable waterways. The Zwin inlet in particular has been an important supply route for all kinds of trade goods from various European Hanseatic cities, including natural stone. Recent multidisciplinary research has led to the identification of a broad lithological spectrum of building stones in and around Bruges, some of which remained unnoticed until now. The extent of the stone network reaches much farther than the southern Low Countries and goes from the Channel area in the southwest to the Baltic Sea coasts in the northeast. This geological archive in building form reflects well the international range of Bruges’ trade network, especially during Late Medieval times.
