The use of 'Fettsimulans HB 307' for the determination of the global migration in fatty foodstuffs

article
The evaluation of food packaging material is discussed with special reference to fatty foodstuffs. A method is described for the determination of the global migration from food packaging materials into fatty foodstuffs by means of the 'Fettsimulans HB 307'. The method is based on the principle adopted by BIT/MP. A sample of packaging material is weighed and subsequently left in contact with fat for 10 days at 40°C. The excess fat is removed from the sample which is then weighed again. If the amount of fat migrated into the sample is known, the global migration of components from the packaging material in the fat can be calculated. The fat is extracted from the sample with n pentane. From the extraction residue the fatty acid methylesters are prepared. From the lauric acid content of the 'Fettsimulans HB 307' (50 ± 1%, calculated as methyl laurate) the fat amount of the sample is determined by an estimation of the methyl laurate content of the fatty acid methylester mixture by means of gas chromatography. The method has been applied to different types of packaging material, including polymers, cellophane, paper and metal cans. So far the results have been very satisfactory. It is, therefore, proposed to adopt the procedure as a standard method.
