Ageing and the thymus-dependent immune system

article
T cell proliferative capacity (induced by mitogens or alloantigens) of spleen and blood lymphocytes from aged rats is decreased due to a decrease in the number of reactive cells. The extent of the decrease was found to be thymus-related. In the thymus, a loss of cells (both relative and absolute) sensitive to the effects of a certain source of thymic factors occurs with advancing age. In young rats, such factors can enhance or induce T cell stimulation in thymocytes which respond only poorly to mitogens and alloantigens without thymic factor treatment.
