Accelerating geothermal development based on ThermoGIS information and a play-based exploration approach

Several decades of oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Netherlands have produced a wealth of subsurface data as large parts of the Dutch subsurface are located within mature hydrocarbon basins. This data is used for ThermoGIS, a unique online tool for geothermal resource assessments. To constrain the geothermal potential, ThermoGIS performs techno-economic calculations, taking into account technical (producible heat) and economical (cost) aspects. In this way, nationwide maps of the techno-economic potential of geothermal energy for various aquifers in the Netherlands are publicly available. The ThermoGIS model, workflow and results are continuously improved and updated based on new information, data and insights.
