Well Re-use: Assessment framework for the readaptation of wells for geothermal application

conference paper
Many oil and gas wells are currently planned for abandonment in the Netherlands and abroad. The current industry practice does not consider the potential of reusing these wells in the lifecycle design of a well (ISO 16530-1, 2017). However, conversion may have an important socio-economic impact by extending the life of the well while increasing the value and delaying the abandonment and increasing social standing of O&G operators. Currently no standardized approaches for assessing reusability of wells for geothermal application exists, despite the growing interest in the topic worldwide. This TNO project aims to fill this gap by developing a structured framework to screen and guide well reuse, focusing on open and closed loop geothermal systems for heat provision. The methodology involves a four-step framework from preliminary screening of wells and reservoirs to more detailed economic analysis, ensuring decision-makers can quickly identify and rank candidate wells for reuse, thereby providing a cost-effective and robust alternative to drilling new wells.
