De impact van generatieve AI op de kwaliteit van de arbeid: Een analyse aan de hand van casussen bij drie koploperbedrijven

The Impact of Generative AI on the Quality of Work: An analysis based on case studies at three leading companies Generative AI (GenAI) is developing rapidly. What its use means for the quality of work has been given little attention in the scientific literature so far. This article therefore examines the effects of using GenAI on the work quality of the employees who use them. We conducted case studies at three organizations (a.s.r., Deloitte, and CLEVER°FRANKE) based on semi-structured interviews with innovation managers, line managers and employees. In these cases, primarily routine tasks are being automated. This can lead to work intensification (increased complexity) and less variety. At the same time, space is created for other tasks and new tasks arise through the offering of new products and services, which has increased the overall variety in the cases studied. GenAI can functionally support employees (providing better information), thereby enhancing autonomy. We also observe a decrease in social interaction, because GenAI takes over the functional support. Finally, mental workload appears to increase due to
intensification of work and greater responsibilities for employees. The effects of using GenAI on work quality can therefore be both positive and negative. This depends to a large extent on how the applications are implemented and how new jobs are designed.
