Collateral damage caused by reactive armour protection against PG-7-like threats

conference paper
Nowadays reactive armour like ERA and NERA are used as protection countermeasures. The use of these armour applications introduces new aspects. For example reactive armour systems react when the incoming threat touches the outside of the armoured vehicle which results in effects that could harm personnel in the surroundings. This is known as collateral damage.
In general, the Dutch Ministry of Defence focuses on minimization of collateral damage caused by these types of add-on systems on armoured vehicles. During a study phase, the Dutch MoD (together with TNO) focused on the determination of the collateral damage of several protection concepts. This paper discusses a general view on collateral damage and different interpretations, the complete process of evaluation as well
as a possible quick scan method in order to evaluate some collateral damage effects during life firing tests. The quick scan method has been used in order to evaluate ERA, but should also be applicable to the evaluation of other add-on systems like ELRA and even some DAS-concepts
