Oriƫntering omtrent de dagelijkse activiteiten en voeding van 10 mannelijke en 10 vrouwelijke studenten gedurende de wintermaanden

article
A study of the daily activities and dietary habits of 10 male and 10 female undergraduates during the winter months - An analysis of the 24-hour activities of 10 male and 10 female medical students aged 20-25 revealed that during 7/8 of their waking time the energy they spent was less than 2.5 Cal. per kilogram of body weight per hour, which is qualified as "very light work". Less than half an hour daily was spent in moderately strenuous work.
These orientating data, which call for more exact observations among different population groups, suggest a lack of physical activity among young adults. The estimated energy for basal metabolism and specific dynamic effect of food accounts for an average of 65% of the total calorie expenditure. The estimated amount of calories spent in 24 hours was 2,650 Cal. for the men (average body weight 73 kg.) and 2,375 Cal. for the girls (63 kg). These activities are 300 Cal. below respectively 125 Cal. above those advised for healthy young people of 25, engaged in "normal activities".
The dietary pattern of the group under review, estimated from 3-5 day averages, supplies considerably less calories than required for energy balance with the actual activity pattern of the subjects from this study.
