Journey under the water: uncovering and improving Systems Engineering and Software Engineering Interplay

conference paper
When engineering complex cyber-physical systems, the interplay between Systems Engineering (SE) and Software Engineering (SWE) is often perceived as a practical challenge. Common symptoms include issues with emergent behavior and system qualities in (integrated) products, as well as errors, rework, and performance problems. While the literature offers general insights into improving SE–SWE interplay, it lacks concrete examples of the underlying dynamics and clear steps for formulating actionable interventions within a specific company context. This paper outlines a method for constructing such interventions using recognized and practical approaches. It illustrates the method with a causal diagram and highlights from a case study, extending our earlier work in [17].
