Surface antigens of hemopoietic stem cells: the expression of BAS, Thy-1, and H-2 antigens on CFU-s

bookPart
Cell separation experiments with mouse bone marrow suspensions have yielded a fairly detailed picture of the pluripotent hemopoietic stem cell. The physical characteristics of the stem cell, such as buoyant density (14), sedimentation rate (13), and light scattering properties (12) lie within the same range as those of a medium- to large-sized lymphocyte. It may, therefore, be concluded that the gross morphology of the stem cell, with respect to its size, shape, and nucleus/cytoplasm ratio, resembles that of a lymphocyte. Studies in which the candidate stem cells have been identified in microscopic preparations have indeed shown cells that fit this description (1).
