Explosive vapour detection for screening of air cargo - TNO technology accelerator program

conference paper
The presentation will provide the description of the Explosive Vapour Detection (EVD) Technology Accelerator program that was funded by Dutch authorities in order to accelerate technology developments in EVD and to provide the authorities with a clear roadmap and outlook on the applicability of the EVD equipment to screen consolidated air cargo and to determine under which operational conditions EVD equipment can be successfully used.
Special attention will be given to the testing methodology and the test scenarios to answer research questions related to EVD, EVD technologies and their maturity, and the actual performance of the current EVD instruments.
The presentation will outline the scientific foundations of some of the main research objectives of the project and the concepts of using the evaporation phenomenon of explosives in an operational environment. The underlying essential mechanisms of explosives behaviour in a given volume, conditions and time, sorption or plume forming as were as detection approaches will be discussed supported by built knowledge related to sampling processes, threats handling, anticontamination issues and scenarios description that was offered to the manufacturers taking part in the project.
