Modifications to FLM4 for one-way traffic based on WIM-measurements

conference paper
Fatigue verification of road bridges is performed using traffic load models from standards, usually comprised of (a set of) default lorries. Partial load factors are calibrated such that the reliability index obtained when using these models meets the target. The most accurate load model for road bridges in the Eurocode, fatigue load model 4, requires adaptations to account for simultaneous presence of several lorries on a bridge. National Annexes (NA) to the Eurocode address this, for example in the Dutch NA by adding convoys and overtaking lorries. This paper proposes several modifications to more accurately estimate the load effects relevant for fatigue. A uniformly distributed load (UDL) is implemented in addition to the default lorries and the number of lorries is modified. The adaptations result in a significant improvement of the load model, especially for long spans, while at the same time making the load model more user friendly.
