Optimizing fracture toughness estimates using Bayesian updating with limited test data
conference paper
A significant number of steel bridges in Europe have reached or are nearing the end of their designed service time. To extend the life of those bridges, data on the current condition of the structure — such as that obtained from monitoring, inspections, and destructive/non-destructive tests — can be considered in the reliability assessment. One of the methods to include this information in the assessment is by performing Bayesian updating. The present study assesses the effect of incorporating data from tests into a Bayesian update for a specific structural parameter, namely the fracture toughness. Different methods are considered to include the data, one conforming to standards and one close to engineering practice.
