Application of the linear-quadratic concept for prediction of late complications : Letter to the editor

article
In this letter the author criticizes a paper on the application of the linear-quadratic concept of late complications after combined irradiation of the uterine cervix. The criticized paper described how fractional tolerance dose values for fractionated and continuous irradiation components of combined irradiation of the uterine cervix can be derived and the biological effectiveness of the combined treatment can be determined. The first comment is made about the tolerance value for the continuous irradiation which is rounded off to 70 Gy. This may wrongly suggest that the tolerance dose for the fractionated irradiation must be equal to that of the continuous irradiation at the specified dose per fraction and dose rate. The second comment concerns the concept of the extrapolated tolerance dose (ETD). When accepting the linear-quadratic concept, the ETD values for both treatments must be equal.
