Strömungsdoppelbrechung in makromolekularen Flüssigkeiten

article
In this lecture a survey is given of the various techniques which use the flow birefringence exhibited by streaming polymeric fluids (melts), in order to investigate the flow properties of these fluids. In particular, some further evidence for the validity of the so-called stress optical law is given. It is shown that n11-n22 (optical analogue to the first normal stress difference) is a quadratic function of the shear stress and that n33-n22 is, in general, about one tenth of n11-n22 and has (with this sequence of indices) always the same sign as n11-n22. Also some practical applications are mentioned. © 1972 Dr. Dietrich Steinkopff Verlag.
