Tectonic heat flow during the permo-carboniferous orogenic collapse - constraints by tectonic and maturity trend analysis
conference paper
Basement heat flow is one of the most influential parameters on basin maturity. Although rapid progress has been made in the development of tectonic models capable of modeling the thermal consequences of basin formation, these models are used in basin modeling. In this paper we investigate the added value of novel tectonic heat-flow models capable of inverting burial history to paleo heat flow trends, consistent with various geodynamic development scenarios (including rifting, underplating and mantle upwelling). The model has been applied for a range of basin settings, and predicted spatio-temporal heat flow variations are well in accordance with observations on heat flow for specific tectonic settings. In this paper we focus on the implications of tectonic heat flow prediction for the permo-Carboferous maturity-depth trends. The processes governing the transformation of the orogenically destabilized Variscan lithosphère into early Jurassic stabilized cratonic lithosphere can be studied by quantitative subsidence analysis. Tectonic analysis indicates that orogenic collapse mechanisms have been dominant and have resulted in significant regional elevation of heat flow at the Permo-Carboneferous. The elevated heat flow trends are consistent with steep maturity-depth trends, locally enhanced by volcanism as witnessed in the Netherlands Friesland Platform.
