Het COPIH-project 1971-1974: IV bloeddruk; anamnestische- en meetgegevens [The COPIH-project 1971-1974. IV. Blood Pressure; data of medical history and measurements]

article
The sphygmomanometer of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was used for the determination of blood pressures in about 80% of the study population. The remaining 20% of the measurements were made with the standard open mercury manometer. The mean systolic pressure (SB) was 135.4 mm Hg in the youngest versus 147.7 mm Hg in the oldest group. The mean values for diastolic pressure (DB) were 82.8 and 88.3 mm Hg, respectively. A total of 332 men, 1.5% of all examinees had a SB≥ 180 combined with a DB≥ 110. According to the WHO criteria, slightly over 25% of the study population had hypertension (either SB≥ 160 or DB≥95 or both). Distribution of the bloodpressure by agegroup as well as the combined effect of age and relative weight on bloodpressure are presented in figures. The relationship of systolic and diastolic pressures are presented in a number of tables. The correlation coefficient between systolic and diastolic pressure was 0.7; the one between relative weight and diastolic pressure was 0.3. Out of the total of 5459 men who, according to WHO criteria were hypertensive, 1700 said to have been told about this previously. However, only 42% of them (720 men) followed some kind of therapy. No clear evidence was found that this therapy was effective. ECG indications of left ventricular hyperthrophy were found by 114 men, but only 76 of them (67%) had hypertension according to the WHO criteria.
