Het COPHIN project 1971-1974: VI de rookgewoonten; het risicoprofiel gecompleteerd [The COPIH project 1971-1974. VI. The smoking habits; the risk profile completed]
article
The smoking habits of the study population of 21,578 men were analysed by age group. The older groups showed a more varied smoking pattern, than the younger groups. Roughly 70% of the men in each age group smoked at the time of the examination. 75-90% of the smokers used cigarettes exclusively. About 20% of the men in each group claimed to have stopped smoking. Of the youngest group 10.3% said mever to have smoked while only 5.3% of the 55-59 yr olds made the same claim. The average daily cigarette consumption of cigarette smokers in all but the oldest group was 17. In the oldest group this was 15. Nearly 12% of the men in each age group smoked in excess of 25 per day. In this respect also the oldest group showed some moderation; in this group only 7.8% smoked more than 25 cigarettes daily. The four risk-factors: smoking, serum cholesterol, blood pressure and relative weight were used to construct a score to indicate the combined risk due to these modifiable factors. The score increases with half points from 0 to a maximum of 4. Scores of 3.5 and 4 were found for 566 men; 0.5% of the youngest group and 3.7% of the oldest. Only 6.1% of the examines scored 0; 11.1% in the youngest and 3.8% in the oldest group. Table 3 indicates how each of the four risk-factors used for the computation contributed to the final risk-score.
