Het COPIH-project 1971-1974: III relatief gewicht, lipiden-spectrum en glucose-gehalte van het bloed [The COPIH-project 1971-1974 III. Relative weight indices, serum cholesterol, total serum lipids and blood glucose]

article
Frequency distributions are presented for height, weight, Broca-index, Quetelet-index, serum cholesterol and total serum lipids for a total population of 21,578 men and are analyzed by age group. Younger men were taller than older men. The relative weight indices reached peak mean-values in the age group 55-59 yr. Severe obesity (Broca-index ≥ 130), however, was most frequent in the oldest group (1.9%). The age group 55-59 yr not only had the highest mean serum cholesterol value (265 mg%) but also the largest proportion with values ≥ 300 mg% (24.5%). The mean serum cholesterol value for the total study population was 261 mg% while 22.2% showed values ≥ 300 mg%. Cholesterol determinations were done according to the method of Huang. About 90% of the men had instructions to fast before being tested. Only in this group were total serum lipids also determined (fosfovanilline method). Starting in 1974, determination of total serum lipids was discontinued as part of the compulsory protocol. Serum lipids were then determined for 19,174 men of whom 15.4% showed values ≥ 10.0 g/liter (mean 8.42 g/liter). Highest values were found in the age-group 50-54 yr. The correlation coefficient between serum cholesterol and total serum lipids was 0.7; that between relative weight and serum cholesterol was only 0.14. The centrally available information on blood glucose levels was considered too incomplete for detailed analysis.
