Modular vehicle simulation in MATLAB/SIMULINK

conference paper
This paper presents ADVANCE, a modular vehicle simulation environment in MATLAB®/Simulink® for concept analysis and controller design. ADVANCE combines efficient powertrain and vehicle dynamics modelling in one (Simulink) simulation environment, and the user has all MATLAB/Simulink functionality at his disposal for controller design and real-time HIL/RCP work. Controllers are being modelled in the same environment as the vehicle model. Due to its modularity and the intuitive interfaces between modules, ADVANCE promotes component model re-use and makes it easy for the user to include his own component models. An application example is the development of an “integrated” vehicle control system for a passenger car, which includes the building of the actuator hardware into the vehicle and testing the controller in driving tests. The integrated control system combines body roll control functionality with handling stability control. Simulations with ADVANCE and subsequent driving tests show that this integrated control system with chassis and brake actuators is a powerful combination for optimising vehicle handling.
