De ontwikkeling van puls-echo technieken in de medische diagnostiek
article
The development of pulse-echo techniques in medical diagnostics - Pulse-echo techniques are nowadays well established in many different fields, as e.g. exploration seismology, non-destructive testing and medical diagnostics. In medical diagnostics above all we have seen a rapid and broad development, to which the non-invasive, non-toxic character of pulse-echo techniques contributed to a high degree. In this paper a number of different aspects of this development will be discussed in more detail: two-dimensional scanning, the improvement of lateral resolution and transducer assembly. At the present moment intensive research is also carried out in the field of tissue Characterization; differentiating sick from healthy tissue may become possible in the near future. Finally the development of new focussing techniques, based on the principle of synthetic aperture, looks very promising as well. This, so called "synthetic focussing", may lead to a substantial improvement of resolution in diagnostic images.
