Leven lang ontwikkelen: de potentie van challenge-based learning voor professionals

article
In this study, we explored through interviews and a design session with professionals to what extent challenge-based learning (CBL) offers opportunities for the lifelong development (LLO) of professionals. In CBL, students work together with professionals on societal challenges, such as developing solar panels for greenhouses. They work and learn together in a multi-disciplinary setting, meaning that professionals and students have different (scientific) backgrounds and can have different learning goals. In this article, we explore the learning potential of CBL for professionals, in relation to four LLO competencies: self-direction over one’s career, adaptive capacity, reflective capacity and developing professional expertise. Based on the findings, we conclude that CBL can not only strengthen the position of individual professionals, but also the innovative capacity of organizations. Through CBL organizations are supported in their search for innovative solutions to difficult issues. We saw that professionals often participate as problem owners or stakeholders to gain insights into problems from their daily practice, less with a targeted objective to learn something themselves, other than current knowledge. Yet it appears that professionals not only increase their professional expertise, but also learn to look for solutions outside their routines. The creativity and fresh perspective of students appears to contribute significantly to their personal learning outcomes. We therefore advise HR professionals to further explore the opportunities of CBL for the LLO of professionals with LLO policy makers from regional educational institutions.
