3D printing allows for the layer-by-layer production of structures from 3D computer designs without human intervention. 3D printing is typically used for products with complicated designs, personalized products, and products that integrate multiple functions. Reasons for 3D printing food include allowing for personalized food variations based on health, lifestyle, or tastes; creating innovative food shapes and textures; using alternative sustainable ingredients; enabling flexible localized production; and creating a social experience around shared recipes. Food printing could take place in large companies, food service, retail, small food businesses, or even homes. Current development is moving from basic shaping to fully personalized recipes and textures.
