This article aims to provide policymakers and researchers with tools to enhance the usefulness of foresight or future studies for policy development. We utilised a literature review and interviews with experienced foresight specialists. The most recent scientific and practical insights are described, highlighting seven focus areas to increase the impact of future studies and optimise their value for strategic decision-making and policy. These areas include timely and intensive stakeholder engagement, prioritising stakeholders, aligning long-term insights with strategic issues, optimal timing, determining the appropriate time horizon that allows for creativity and a feeling of urgency, developing concrete action perspectives together, and viewing future studies as a continuous and deeply ingrained organisational process.
