Clothing, physical load and military performance

In contrast to the physiological effects of clothing, the physical effects are scarcely documented. Yet the ease of wear, depending on weight, bulk and motion restriction, is an important f actor in comfort and functionality. In this paper, it is tried to gather opinions and facts in the literature and to detect the main gaps in knowledge. Energy cost, performance decrement and subjective evaluations are dealt with successively and typical figures are given for a few clothing and equipment items. It is concluded that too little is known about the additive effect of various loads, about the relationship between physiology and performance and about the effect of individual performance decrement on military operations.
