Insufficiency of current clothing description
bookPart
Current two-parameter clothing descriptions are discussed. It is concluded that a description in terms of insulation and vapour permeability is insufficient f or non-equilibrium situations, whereas these are of great practical significance. The shortcomings are illustrated with experimental data on fire fighters garments. An exact physical description is presented of concomitant heat and vapour transfer in which the most important additional parameter is the absorption capacity of the fabric (regain). With a three-parameter description dynamic situations may be fairly predicted. Some conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of semi-permeable rainwear and about definitions of sweat efficiency.
