Studies on the physiology of nutrition in Surinam : III. Urea excretion

article
The proportions of urea nitrogen- total nitrogen, urea-creatinin, and the quantity of urea calculated at specific gravity 1.01 in a single portion of urine were used as criteria for the protein supply in population groups in Surinam. Introductory tests were carried out to establish the fluctuations in these proportions in a healthy person; they were found to be rather small. In animal experiments the quantity of urea calculated at specific gravity 1.01 was the best measure of protein ingestion, the next best being the proportion urea-creatinin, followed by the proportion urea nitrogen-total nitrogen.
On the strength of these criteria the protein supply of Bushnegro children was found to be markedly poorer than in the J avanese and Amerindian population groups.
