The sound insulation of circular and slit-shaped apertures

article
Very simple formulae are deduced for the sound transmission factor of small circular and narrow slit-shaped apertures in walls (not necessarily thin walls). These formulae are in good agreement with existing formulae, valid for some special cases, and with the results of our experiments. These results are used for calculating the diminution of sound insulation caused by a small circular aperture in a party wall and a narrow slit around the door of a room. It is found that the effect of small apertures is relatively much greater than that of larger apertures.
