Regulation of the Permeability of human endothelial cell monolayers

bookPart
Endothelial cells line the blood and lymph vessels and form together a diffuse tissue of more than 750 g in an adult person. In relation to their function as an ioterphase between blood and tissuc endothelial cells are equipped with many functions including the active regulation of the extravasation of fluid, solutes, hormones, and macromolecules, the ability to prevent coagulation and the adhesion and activation of platelets, and the recruitment of leukocytes in specific areas where they are needed. In muscular blood vessels, endothelial cells play an important role in vasoregulation, while in particular in the lung they are involved in the conversion and catabolism of vasoactive agents. Funhermore, they are the vector of angiogenesis, the outgrowth of new microvessels from existing ones.
